STAMPEDE ANNOUNCE JAKOB L. BEIER “COURAGE AWARD”

PROVIDE TWO $500 SCHOLARSHIPS ANNUALLY

The Sioux Falls Stampede announced in March, 2004, the formation of the Jakob L. Beier Stampede Scholarship Award for Courage. This award will annually provide a $500 scholarship each to one female and one male "senior" playing high school hockey in the state of South Dakota.

To become eligible to win, a student must have played for a South Dakota high school hockey program and have made a significant contribution to his or her local community during their high school career. Judging will be based on academic record, participation in school, community activities and impact on the game of hockey. A letter of recommendation from the player's current high school coach should be included. The scholarship applicants must also pursue studies at an accredited college/university during the fall and spring upon high school graduation.

Jakob Beier was a 5-year-old boy who lost his life on December 27, 2003 after an 11-month battle with brain cancer. Jakob's dream was to have played for the Sioux Falls Stampede and eventually one day play for the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL.

"Jakob was the ultimate warrior!" stated Jim Loria, Stampede President. "He was such a courageous young boy who had to battle so many obstacles. His spirit, his love for life and his emotional attachment for the game of hockey and the Stampede deeply touched our organization. We thank the Beier family for permitting the Stampede to continue to honor the memory of Jakob who truly was a 'big man' in life".

Lance and Lori Beier, parents of Jakob, added: "We are very excited and can't think of a better way to honor Jakob's memory than by helping young hockey players in our home state pursue their athletic and educational dreams for the future. It was Jakob's dream, too, to play hockey and he looked up to the Stampede players as great role models. And that is why our family is proud to be associated with the Sioux Falls Stampede organization.”

The first set of scholarship award winners were announced and unveiled during the Stampede's final regular season home game in 2003-04.
