Five different players tallied goals and Clay Witt stopped 36 shots as the Sioux Falls Stampede rolled over the Sioux City Musketeers 5-1 Saturday night in Sioux City. Conor Allen and Matt Lindblad led the way for the Herd with a goal and an assist each. The Stampede won despite being out shot 37-20 on the night and improved to 22-8-9 on the season. The Stampede are now six points behind Omaha for second place in the West Division with three games in hand.
The Stampede jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Zack Kamrass tallied his second goal of the season just 1:57 into the game. Kamrass picked up the puck in the high slot and wristed a shot past the stick side of Musketeers netminder Matt Skoff to give the Herd an early lead. Less then five minutes later, Matt Lindblad doubled the Herd’s led with his 14th goal of the season. Mike Voran’s shot from the slot was stopped, but Lindblad pounced on the rebound and buried the puck into the back of the net to make it 2-0. The Herd led by two despite being out shot 16-4 in the first period.
It was much of the way in the second period when Dominic Zombo tallied his 9th goal of the season 5:08 into the period. Zombo took the puck right off the face-off from Matt Farris and wristed a shot right past the blocker of Skoff to give the Herd a three goal edge. Less then three minutes later Matt Bailey and Josh Holmstrom teamed up to find Conor Allen up the left wing boards who brought the puck over the blue line and slapped a puck high onto the blocker of Skoff and into the back of the net. The goal was Allen’s fourth of the season and third in four games. The goal also chased Skoff from the game to the bench. Clay Witt took care of the rest, stopping all 13 shots in the period.
Josh Holmstrom capped things off 6:36 into the third period with a shorthanded goal. Matt Bailey chipped the puck out of the Stampede’s zone to Allen who broke into the Musketeers zone on a 2-on-1 with Holmstrom. Allen found Holmstrom in the slot who kicked the puck off his skate and then beat Musketeers netminder Jake Hildebrand to make it 5-0. It appeared Witt was once again on his way to another shutout, but Ryan Carpenter broke up his bid when tipped in a goal in front of the net with less then eight minutes remaining in regulation.
The Stampede finished the night 0 for 4 on the powerplay and stopped all three powerplay opportunities for Sioux City. The Herd return to action Tuesday night when they travel to Lincoln to face the Stars at 7PM. Fans can watch the game “live” at Buffalo Wild Wings. |
