TODAY’S GAME: The Stampede face the Chicago Steel for the second and final time during the regular season this year. The Stampede topped the Steel in a crazy 8-6 back on February 8th in Sioux Falls.
STAMPEDE UPDATE: The Stampede went 2-1-0 in three games last weekend. On Friday, the Herd topped the top team in the league in Tri-City 4-1 before falling 3-1 to the Storm on Saturday night. Sioux Falls closed out the weekend with a convincing 5-2 victory over the Sioux City Musketeers at the Tyson Events Center.
Tonight marks the start of the final 14 games of the regular season which ends on April 13th. The Herd enter tonight’s game tied for second place in the Western Conference with Waterloo. Sioux Falls is 23-6-2 since December 1st and are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games.
The Herd’s balanced scoring attack has been consistent all season. Last weekend, Sioux Falls tallied ten goals on the weekend with ten different players tallying goals. The club doesn’t have one player in the top 20 in the USHL in scoring, but have 14 players with 19 points or more on the season. Jami Krannila leads the team in scoring with 42 points (16g, 26a) in 47 games.
STEEL UPDATE: The Steel have consistently been one of the top teams in the USHL this season. They enter tonight in second place in the Eastern Conference with a one-point lead over third place Cedar Rapids.
The Steel are coming off a weekend split against Dubuque. After falling 5-3 in Dubuque on Friday, the Steel rebounded for a 5-3 win over their own on home ice on Saturday. The Steel have won three of their last four games and are one of the best teams on home ice this season at 16-7-0.
Chicago is led by Nick Abruzzese who is the top scorer in the USHL with 63 points (21g, 42a) in 48 games this season. Robert Mastrosimone is second with 46 points. The Steel are second in the league in goals scored per-game, averaging 3.88. In goal, Justin Robbins has led the way with a 21-11-3 mark, a 3.12 GAA and a .882 save percentage.
