SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Sioux Falls Stampede selected ten players in the 2021 USHL Phase I Draft to bolster their affiliate list Wednesday evening. Sioux Falls selected seven forwards and three defensemen. Players selected all have 2005 birth years.
"We are pleased with our selections for the future of Stampede hockey," said Assistant Coach and Director of Scouting Riley Colvard. "Our entire coaching and scouting staff worked tirelessly over this last season to evaluate the right talent for our organization, and we are excited to see them all in Sioux Falls in June."
The Stampede used their first-round, second overall selection on forward Will McDonough from Boston Advantage 16U. A native of Duxbury, Mass., McDonough tallied eight goals and added two helpers in four games played.
In the second round, Sioux Falls selected defenseman Zachary Sharp from Naperville, Ill., with the 17th overall selection. Sharp tallied four goals and four assists in 14 games played from the blue line with Chicago Mission 14UU in 2019-20.
The Herd went back to offense in the third round to select forward Kai Matthew from Edmonton, Alberta. Kai tallied 18 goals and 23 assists in 30 games played with the Northern Alberta Xtreme preparatory school during the 2019-20 season. He is committed to the University of Denver.
In the fourth round, Sioux Falls selected forward Tanner Bruender from Chaska, Minn., with the 47th overall selection. Bruender tallied nine goals and 10 assists for 19 points in 14 games played with the Chaska/Chanhassen Stormhawks.
The fifth-round second went to forward Jacob Saterzebski from Chicago, Illnois. Jastrzebski tallied eight goals and 15 assists in 36 games played with the Chicago Mission. He played with second-round selection Zack Sharp.
Defenseman Maxim Strbak was the sixth-round selection for the Herd. The Kosice, Slovakia, native recorded four goals and four assists from the blue line in 16 games played.
The Stampede selected defenseman Lenny Greenberg and forward Anthony Cappello with the next two selections. Greenberg tallied seven goals and 32 assists with Bishop Kearney Selects 15U AAA last season and Cappello tallied seven goals and three assists for 10 points with North Jersey Avalanche 15U AAA.
The team finished the draft with North Island Silvertips forward Matt Wood from Nanaimo, British Columbia in round nine and forward Zach Nehring from Minot, N.D., in round ten. Wood recorded five goals and eight assists for 13 points in 18 games played. Nehring tallied 20 goals and 26 assists in 46 games played with Shattuck St. Mary’s last season.
