Former Stampede forward Dane Walters is helping Western Michigan towards another NCAA Tournament appearance. The right winger leads the Broncos in goals with 12 and in points with 23 entering the final weekend of conference play in the CCHA. Western Michigan has a one point lead over Notre Dame for second place in the CCHA and will close out the regular season at Michigan State this weekend.
The Broncos are 18-8-8 on the season and are 9th in the PairWise rankings, a system that mimics the NCAA Tournament Selection. The Broncos will be looking for their second straight CCHA Post-Season Tournament Championship after topping Miami and Michigan to earn the title last year. This is the last season of the CCHA as Western Michigan will join the National Collegiate Hockey Conference next season.
Walters is captain of the Broncos and has appeared in virtually every game with the Broncos during this four seasons at Western Michigan. The St. Paul, Minn. native recorded a career high 29 points last year with the Broncos.
The Former Herd star is currently on the ballot for the Hobey Baker Award which is given annually to top college hockey player. The list of top ten candidates will be announced on March 21st with the Hobey Hat Trick of three finalists will be announced on April 3rd and the winner will be announced on April 12th. There are several other former Stampede players on the ballot as well.
Walters skated with the Stampede during the 2007-08 season, posting 12 points (6g, 6a) in 57 games while leading the Herd to the Clark Cup Playoffs.
