Sioux Falls, SD—The Sioux Falls Stampede made some moves early during the USHL Phase II Draft Tuesday morning. The Herd sent their first round selection (3rd overall) and forward Regen Cavanagh to the Bloomington Thunder in exchange for forward Mitchell Mattson. The Herd also acquired a conditional draft choice in 2018 from the Green Bay Gamblers in exchange for forward Lean Bergmann.
Mattson spent the last two seasons skating with the Thunder, posting 28 points (12g, 16a) in 55 games in 2016-17. The Grand Rapids, Minnesota native will bring some great size up front at 6-foot-4, 194-pounds. He skated in 25 games with Grand Rapids High School in 2015-16, recording 46 points in 25 games before joining the Thunder for 21 games. Last May, Mattson was selected by the Calgary Flames in the fifth round (126th overall) of the NHL Draft in Buffalo. The centerman has already committed to play Division I collegiate hockey at the University of North Dakota.
Cavanagh was obtained by the Stampede from the Dubuque Fighting Saints this past season. He skated in 16 games with the Herd and tallied four assists. Bergmann just completed his second season with the Stampede, registering 28 points (12g, 16a) in 69 career games.
The Stampede will make their first pick in the draft with the third selection of the second round (19th overall) followed by the 13th selection in the second round (29th overall).
