Sioux Falls, SD—The Sioux Falls Stampede released the roster for their upcoming 2017-18 training camp which will begin on September 11th. The roster includes players from 14 states and five countries (USA, Canada, Russia, Finland & Kazakhstan) and ten players from last season. Click here for all USHL training camp rosters.
Returning forwards include Jaxon Nelson, Nick Bowman, Matt Quercia, Grant Reichenbacher and Khristian Acosta. Nelson tallied 18 points (7g, 11a) while skating in 54 of 60 games last season. He was recently named to the USA All-American Prospects Game in Buffalo. Acosta joined the Stampede late in the season and tallied 13 points in just 20 games. Nelson is committed to the University of Minnesota while Acosta is headed to the University of Massachusetts.
Newcomers up front include Nolan Walker who skated in five games with the Herd last season, recording six points on three goals and three assists. He appeared in 30 games with Culver Military Academy and tallied 37 points (16g, 21a). He has already committed to St. Cloud State University. Other players include Russian forward Artem Ivanyuzhenkov who played last season with Russkie Vityazi of the MHL, posting 27 points in 45 games. Zach Risteau was acquired in a trade with the Chicago Steel, but played last season with Merritt of the BCHL where he tallied 50 points in 53 games. Carson Dimoff was the Herd’s first selection in the 2017 USHL Phase II Draft and spent last season with Aberdeen of the NAHL, finishing third on the team in scoring with 51 points in 58 games.
Defensively the Herd return AJ Villella, Paul DeNaples, Jack St. Ivany, and Colin Swoyer. DeNaples registered 17 points (7g, 10a) in 55 games while Villella had 14 points (5g, 9a) in 50 games. DeNaples will play collegiate hockey at Penn State while Villella is a Northeastern recruit. Add in Corson Green who was acquired from Chicago in a trade last season and the Stampede have a solid defensive core. Green won a Clark Cup with the Steel and tallied 15 points and a plus-5 in 48 games. Green will skate for the University of New Hampshire next season.
In between the pipes, the Stampede return Mikhail Berdin who recorded 14 wins and a 2.73 goals against average (GAA) last year with the Herd. The Ufa, Russia native posted a 2.17 GAA and a .936 save percentage over his last eight games. He is a draft pick of the Winnipeg Jets and is expected to participate in training camp before joining the Stampede in late September. Also in goal is Jaxson Stauber from Wayzata, MN. Stauber finished last season with a 2.36 GAA and a .922 save percentage in 18 games with Victory Honda U18. He is the son of former Hobey Baker and Minnesota Golden Gopher, Robb Stauber.
Stampede players report to Sioux Falls on September 9th and begin practice on Monday, September 11th. The Herd host the Fargo Force in pre-season play at the Scheels IcePlex on Friday, September 22nd and the Sioux City Musketeers on Saturday, September 23rd, puck drop is 7:05 PM each night. Season ticket holders receive free entry based on the number of season memberships for the year. Tickets for non-season ticket holders are $10 and can be purchased at the door.
