Former captain heads back to alma mater

Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Stampede are proud to announce that Assistant Coach and Director of Scouting Nick Oliver has been hired by St. Cloud State University (NCHC) as an assistant coach. Oliver was a former team captain and forward for the Huskies between 2011 and 2015.

Oliver spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach under Scott Owens and played a key role in molding the 2017–18 Stampede team that finished with 32 wins and the fifth best record in the USHL. The Roseau, Minn. native was also the Stampede’s main scout for the past three seasons.

Oliver, 27, joined the Stampede in 2015 after skating four years at St. Cloud State. This past season, Oliver served as an assistant coach with the U.S. Junior Select Team at the World Junior A Challenge in Nova Scotia. He helped guide Team USA to a Silver Medal at the event.

"We couldn’t be happier for Nick,” said Stampede general manager and head coach Scott Owens. “We are excited for him to have the opportunity to return to his alma mater and begin his college coaching career. Nick played a huge role in recruiting and securing a majority of Stampede players the past three years and did an excellent job with on ice coaching as well. He will be missed, but we are proud and appreciative of all he accomplished while with the Herd.”

A 2015 graduate of St. Cloud State, Oliver was named the NCHC's Sportsmanship Award recipient in 2015.  He helped lead the Huskies to a first place finish in the 2012-13 WCHA regular season along with an NCAA Division I Midwest Region title in 2013 and a trip to the 2013 NCAA Division I Frozen Four.  As a junior, Oliver was part of the SCSU squad that captured the inaugural NCHC regular season championship in 2013-14.

The Stampede are currently preparing for the upcoming USHL Drafts. USHL Phase I Draft will take place on Monday, May 7th. That draft is ten rounds of “Futures” age players only, which are U-17 players for next year’s season (2002 birth year). USHL Phase II Draft will take place on Tuesday, May 8th.
