Herd win 3-2 in OT and fall 3-2 in mid-summer showdown

Sioux Falls, S.D. – The Stampede and Sioux City Musketeers met on Saturday for two rare mid-summer scrimmages at the SCHEELS IcePlex. Both squads were taking one more look at potential players for the upcoming 2018-19 season before training camp officially begins in early September and played each other on Friday night in Sioux City with the Stampede winning both games, 4-3 and 6-5 OT. Sioux Falls and Sioux City both had two teams participating in two separate scrimmages and both contests featured three 17-minute periods

The first game featured Stampede team White against Sioux City team Green. Both teams took a little time to get their legs, but Sioux City got on the board with over six minutes into the period on a shot that sneaked past Maiszon Balboa (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Both teams exchanged powerplays, but the Musketeers grabbed the only goal leading 1-0 after one period.

Sioux City added to their lead six minutes into the second when a shot from the right circle deflected off a skate and squeaked into the net for a 2-0 advantage. It remained that way until late in the period when the Stampede got their offense clicking and Ethan Phillips (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) found Jared Westcott (Imperial, MO) who wristed a shot into the back of the net to get the Herd on the board at 2-1.

The third period went back-and-forth and it appeared the Musketeers might take the first game, but Westcott struck again with 2:29 left in the period. Maxwell Crozier (Calgary, Alberta) sent a pass into the left circle for Westcott who blasted a shot into the upper right-hand corner of the net to tie the game and force overtime.

Sioux Falls would complete the rally in overtime when Noah Roofe (Chesterfield, Mo.) sent a perfect pass into the high slot for Ryan Sullivan (Grosse Pt Farms, Mich.) who one-timed the puck into the back of the net to give Sioux Falls White a 3-2 overtime victory over Sioux City Green. Jaxson Stauber played the second half of the game, blanking the Musketeers and earning the win in between the pipes.

In the second game, Stampede blue squared off against Sioux City White. The Herd wasted little time as Blake Bride (Louisville, Colo.) found Marko Reifenberger who quickly found the back of the net to give the Stampede a 1-0 lead. That would be the only goal of the period.

Sioux City would respond with a blast of their own midway through the second when a shot from the right circle got past Josh Langford (Frisco, Texas) to make it a 1-1 game. Sioux Falls would respond though as Kyle Oleksiuk blasted a shot under the crossbar to regain the lead for the Herd at 2-1 at the end of two periods.

Sioux City would rally in period three. After the Stampede’s was assessed a double minor for cross checking, the Musketeers would strike with a power play goal to tie the game at two with 6:21 remaining in the game. It looked as though the game would be headed to overtime again, but the Musketeers squashed those plans when they slipped the puck past Chad Veltri (Cheswick, Pa.) with 1:54 remaining in regulation. The Herd added pressure late to try and tie the game, but came up short as the Musketeers captured their first scrimmage win of the weekend, 3-2.

Both teams will have private practices tomorrow in the final day of camp before making their final selections. The Herd’s Sept. training camp roster will be made available in the coming weeks. Training camp will begin after Labor Day in Sioux Falls. A complete preseason schedule will be released in early August. The regular season begins on Sept. 26 in Pittsburgh as the Herd open play at the USHL Fall Classic against Central Illinois.
