TONIGHT’S GAME: The Stampede face the U.S. National Team Development Program, U-18’s for the second time this season tonight. The Herd fell 5-4 in a shootout to U-18’s at the first regular season game of the year back on September 29th in Pittsburgh. After tonight, these two teams will not meet again this season.
STAMPEDE UPDATE: The Stampede rallied from a 2-0 third period deficit to top the Waterloo Black Hawks 5-2 last Saturday night at Young Arena. It marked the Herd’s fifth straight win and are now 8-1-1 in their last 10 games. The Herd got two goals and an assist in the third from Cade Borchardt while Artem Ivanyuzhenkov finished the night with a goal and three assists. Jaxson Stauber earned the win in goal with 30 saves on the night.
The Herd have been consistently impressive over the last two and half months of the season, going 18-3-2 since December 1st. The Herd are winning games due to their balanced scoring attack which ranks fourth in the league, averaging 3.83 goals per-game. Despite their offensive attack, the Herd don’t have one player in the top 20 in scoring, though Artem Ivanyuzhenkov is knocking on the doorstep with 35 points on the season.
Tonight is the first of three games in three days for the Herd who will travel to Muskegon after the game and face the Lumberjacks on Saturday and Sunday.
USA UPDATE: Team USA is loaded with talent and are led by Jack Hughes is considered by many to be the #1 overall pick in the upcoming NHL Draft in June. Hughes has been a bit banged up, but is expected to return to the lineup tonight against the Herd. The Orlando, Florida native has 56 points (13g, 43a) in just 28 games. Trevor Zergas leads the team with 60 points (18g, 42a) in 41 games.
Hughes and Cole Caufield are on the brink of setting all-time records for the NTDP. Hughes is just four assists from tying and five from exceeding the all-time record for assists at 122. Caufield has 90 career goals with USA and is 15 away from exceeding Phil Kessel’s all-time record of 104 goals.
Team USA is coming off a bronze medal at the 5 Nations Tournament in Russia. They fell to Sweden 7-5, defeated Finland 3-2, the Czech Republic 8-2 before falling to Russia in the final game 8-4. USHL wise, the U.S. Under-18’s have won five straight games against USHL opponents this season and are averaging seven goals a game during that stretch.
UP NEXT: The Stampede head to Muskegon after the game tonight and face the Lumberjacks on Saturday at 6:15 PM and wrap up the weekend series on Sunday with a 3:15 PM contest.
